Our coordinates go in which MARC field?
PreConference (Morning):
Managing Cataloging Departments, or, the Accidental Leader
Presenter: Rebecca Lubas & Bobby Bothmann
Description:
You've found yourself playing a leadership role in cataloging, or would like to pursue a leadership role. Many of us come to this point in our careers because we've been good catalogers -- we know our subject area, we're on top of the standards. But much of our cataloging training is focused on the work itself, and not on management on a macro-scale. What are the issues managers of cataloging departments face?
Our workshop will help you think about these issues, and give you practical advice and tips to take home and use, whether you are a newbie or experienced manager. We will focus on three areas especially: coping with new and evolving standards, using outsourcing as a tool, and the constant need for training.
Fee: $30.00
Limited to 30 registrants--first come, first serve.
PreConference (Afternoon):
Map Cataloging
Presenter: Paige Andrew
Description:
This basic maps cataloging workshop will primarily delve into the three descriptive areas of the bibliographic record that typically cause concern and consternation for those catalogers new to the format or who only occasionally have the pleasure of working with sheet maps. Those three areas are: (1) titles and choosing between multiple titles for the title proper, (2) scale statements and conversion (and touch on projection and coordinates), and (3) physical description, with a focus on taking correct measurements. Content of this half-day workshop will be according to AACR2R standards but additionally we will look together at RDA-based changes that are broader in nature, such as no longer using abbreviations.
The instructor’s primary goal is to build confidence in working with the details of these areas, as well as to teach the correct way to handle the data that goes into each. We will learn to use the Natural Scale Indicator with a hands-on exercise, and will conclude with the attendees creating a brief descriptive record for a map.
Workshop attendees will receive a set of handouts as reference materials that touch on the entire range of descriptive and other elements contained in the bibliographic record for maps. The handouts cover not only the above-mentioned areas but also include a couple of bibliographies, several “ready reference” resources, and a range of RDA-based documentation. In addition, each attendee will receive a Natural Scale Indicator thanks to the former map distributor company, MapLink, which is now a part of Eastview Geospatial.
Fee: $50.00
Limited to 16 registrants, first come, first serve.
Workshops
Best Practices for Batchloading e-Serials Workshop
Presenter: Bonnie Parks
Description:
Electronic resources are now a key component of many libraries. We have long known that catalog records for individual resources facilitate discovery and access. However, as libraries continue to increase their acquisition of electronic resources by purchasing packages of serials, ebooks, and streaming media content, cataloging individual titles isn’t always a possibility. Instead, libraries often rely upon outside sources for their MARC records and load records in large sets. This workshop introduces those new to batch record loading to some practical tools and workflow strategies to manage their records more effectively. Topics covered include: what to look for in vendor record sets, how to customize for your library’s needs and how to take advantage of freely-available tools such as MARCEdit to batch edit and further enhance the quality of your records.
Cataloging Digital Images
Presenter: Vicki Sipe
Description:
Many of our image collections live in the non-MARC world. Recognizing that fact, this workshop will discuss tools and standards that are available to guide decisions about record creation for digital images in MARC and non-MARC environments. A major focus will be on the methods and considerations in image analysis as a means to uncover information about an image that would be useful in all record environments. We will look at MARC and non-MARC records, and will include records created using AACR2 and RDA.
Constructing Headings in RDA Workshop
Presenter: Adam L. Schiff
Description:
This workshop will examine changes between the construction of headings in AACR2 and access points in RDA, with particular attention to the kinds of headings often needed in media cataloging. We will look at the new MARC bibliographic and authority fields for attributes of persons, corporate bodies, and works and expressions, and participants will gain some experience through exercises constructing RDA access points and authority records.
eSerials Cataloging Using the CONSER Standard Record Workshop
Presenter: Steve Shadle
Description:
This workshop will provide an overview of cataloging eSerials following current CONSER Standard Record practices. Steve will also discuss anticipated changes to CONSER eSerials cataloging practice based on the upcoming implementation of RDA.
FRBR for Film & Video
Presenter: Kelley McGrath
Description:
This session will look at how the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model could be used to improve access to film and video. There will be a demonstration of a prototype end-user discovery interface (http://blazing-sunset-24.heroku.com/) sponsored by OLAC and a discussion of a project using the XC Metadata Services Toolkit (http://www.extensiblecatalog.org/) to mine existing MARC data to populate this sort of interface. Participants will be asked to provide feedback and suggest future directions for this project.
Metadata Workshop
Presenters: Zoe Chao & Rob Olendorf
Description:
This workshop is geared primarily towards those wanting to learn about XML based metadata that describe digital resources and makes them findable. We will introduce different types of metadata and common metadata standards but will focus on descriptive metadata schemas. As there are a large number of potential schemas, the goal is less to learn the specifics of any given schema, and more about how to understand and use schemas. We will look at some examples and metadata applications, and include hands-on exercises.
Sound Cataloging Workshop
Presenter: Jay Weitz
Description:
This session will cover sources of information, when to input a new record, physical/technical descriptions, Playaways and other digital media, and other topics to be determined by audience interest. Attendees should have a basic knowledge of the MARC 21 format for Sound Recordings and AACR2 cataloging rules for Sound Recordings. Some of the basic changes that RDA will bring to the future of cataloging Sound Recordings may also be discussed.
Video Cataloging Workshop
Presenter: Jay Weitz
Description:
This session will cover sources of information, when to input a new record, special considerations for music videos, physical/technical descriptions, streaming video, and other topics to be determined by audience interest. Attendees should have a basic knowledge of the MARC 21 format for Visual Materials and AACR2 cataloging rules for videorecordings. Some of the basic changes that RDA will bring to the future of cataloging videorecordings may also be discussed.
